But Volvo has been attempting to spice up its image for some time now. It is from this effort that the “Ocean Race” special editions spring—they’re named after the Volvo Ocean Race, which the automaker bluntly (and correctly) identifies as “one of the world’s most grueling adventures.” In real life, of course, no one plays it more safe than the proverbial college professors and soccer moms behind the wheel of a Swedish crossover. But the Ocean Race XC60 aims to “embody the soul of human challenge,” albeit “in the special comfort of a Volvo.”
The Ocean Race itself may be on the wild side, but the maritime theme of this special edition goes well with the Volvo XC60 crossover SUV. It adds 18-inch wheels, a bespoke blue paint job (which resembles the color of a cheerful lagoon rather than the steely blue of the open sea), and orange stitching on leather seats that are colored either black or “blonde.”
Two powertrains are offered: The T6 Drive-E with a 302-hp super- and turbocharged four and the T6 AWD, powered by a 300-hp turbocharged straight-six. The Drive-E model spins its front wheels through an eight-speed automatic, while the AWD is fitted with a six-speed slushbox.
This purely cosmetic Ocean Drive package is priced at $1400 above the base model, driving the price to $42,100 for the Drive-E and $43,600 for the AWD. That’s a pretty good deal for such baubles, and one that surely doesn’t require a strong sense of adventure.
